Towns on the Niger River in todays Mali have for centuries been the focus point and hub of north south trade, i.e. moving of gold and slaves from the south against salt from the north. Trading routes from the tropical south converged in towns on the banks of the Niger River with with routes from the desert and north of the Sahara. West-east travel routes connected to centers of Muslim importance [e.g. for the Hadj] like Mecca, Medina and Cairo to centers of Muslim teaching like Timbuktu, Mopti and Djenné. This book shows some of these historic places as they were in 1977, great changes have occurred since and political changes have left their marks. The 137 pages of this book try to relate to the reader the beauty of predominantly adobe architecture and culture of this region and document the incredible trip we made in 1977/78, starting in Lomé/Togo and ending in Dakar/Senegal.

With these books I documented the work of the highly specialized ship demolition teams, shipbreakers, in La Spezia, Italy, who were reducing former seagoing vessels to small metal cuttings, ready to be fed to the smelter ovens for recycling. The ships arriving for demolition had their origin in all parts of the world, some of the parts/equipment seen can be traced back to the Belfast Harland&Wolff shipyards, others to Hamburg & Kiel HDW. The last breaking yards in Italy disappeared in the mid-nineties, images and stories of them and their work have become part of the patrimony and history of this region, I hope my book will be a valuable addition and help to remember the work of these brave workers.

Once we comprehend/understand that there is only one EARTH available to live on it should become obvious that not only do we have to treasure what still is left of Nature, but do everything we can to safeguard at least the status quo. We have to re-learn respect for Nature and re-connect to her. Furthermore, at this stage of destruction, there is an urgent need to reverse any activity that further impacts on the integrity of planet earth and unbalances its fragile complex ecosystem.
While one has to realize that the planet follows its own path of evolution [tectonic activities, weathering, erosion etc.] as visible in part ONE of this book, we also have to acknowledge anthropogenic interferences that contribute to and exacerbate those ‘developments’. By contributing the aspect of pollution, a tiny spectrum of its presence is shown in part TWO, it becomes evident how men inflict irreversible damage to life on earth, the magnitude of which has not yet been fully fathomed and understood. In part THREE images show the space over land and sea, the third dimension, where the ocean reacting with solar radiation creates strong vertical and horizontal movements of water enriched air leading to clouds, fog, rain, rainbows, winds and storms.
Experiencing the rocks, sea and sky together has the magic power to make humans at one with Nature again, a ‘secret’ man has enjoyed and known for hundreds/thousands of years. And ever since mankind started to migrate, coasts have been the source of an irresistible pull to explore and find out, what lies behind the water, behind the horizon. "black canvas" is a series of pictures taken over the last few years, documenting the appearance of markings [feldzeichen=agropicts] on silage bales, a phenomenon i have observed in Ireland since about 1990. other than the crop circles in the UK, first reported in 1980, here the originators are known, albeit rarely seen in action. as with the crop circles, explanations as why they appeared are little convincing and/or contradictory. feldzeichen are painted with whitewash on to the black plastic liner of bales. most of the signs were discovered by chance, spotted only from the train, riding the bus or passing by in the car. feldzeichen has 58 pages.
